LAWRENCE, KAN. — August 15, 2018 — The Lawrence Humane Society today announced that it will be participating in Clear the Shelters Day, a one-day, nationwide adoption initiative where animal shelters across the country try to find homes for every adoptable pet in their care, this Saturday, August 19. More than 900 shelters are expected to participate this year in an effort to find homes for nearly 80,000 pets — including more than 150 pets from the Lawrence Humane Society — in just one day!
In 2017, the Lawrence Humane Society found homes for more than 130 pets and emptied all of its adoption kennels.
Lawrence Humane Society’s 2018 Clear the Shelter Day will feature waived adoption fees for all pets. In addition, the Lawrence Humane Society will open early — at 10:00am — on Saturday.
Waived adoption fees include spay/neuter, microchip with lifetime registration, up-to-date vaccines, a starter bag of Hill’s Science Diet pet food, pre-certification in Companion Protect Pet Health Insurance, collar and leash (dogs), carrier (cats), and more. Adopters are also welcome to bring collars, leashes, and carriers with them.
“Clear the Shelter Day is the biggest adoption event of the year at the Lawrence Humane Society and we are so excited to be participating again,” said Kate Meghji, executive director for the Lawrence Humane Society. “Our goal is to find every single pet that’s in our care this Saturday a loving forever home by the end of the day and clear our shelter so we have room to help more pets in need. With our community’s support, we know we can do it!”

To facilitate a successful adoption experience, adopters interested in participating in Clear the Shelter day should:
- Allow yourself enough time and anticipate increased traffic. Adoption specials bring many patrons to the Lawrence Humane Society. It may take longer than usual to meet a pet and complete the adoption experience. Adopters should give themselves enough time to find the right match.
- Plan for weather, rain or shine! With temperatures expected to reach the mid- to high-80s on Saturday, please make sure to plan appropriately! Wear sunscreen and bring hats or umbrellas to protect against the sun’s rays, and make sure to bring water to stay hydrated. Meet-and-greet areas for adoptable dogs, and waiting areas for the event, are outdoors.
- Be ready to take your new family member home with you! All adopted pets must go home with their new families the same day, immediately following adoption.
- Please leave furry family members at home. Due to increased traffic to the shelter, the Lawrence Humane Society will be unable to perform dog introductions on Clear the Shelter Day. Research shows that a properly staged introduction outside of the shelter environment increases the chance of a positive introduction outcome and, as such, all adopters will be provided with step-by-step instructions on how to properly introduce their new pet to their resident pet(s).
