All gifts and pledges matched, up to $250,000, through October 31 by the Petco Foundation and several individual supporters to finish fundraising effort for new shelter facility.

LAWRENCE, KAN.  – October 2, 2018 – The Lawrence Humane Society today announced a Matching Gift Challenge to help complete fundraising efforts for the organization’s new $7.5 million facility by Halloween.

With only $500,000 remaining to raise, the Petco Foundation, a national animal welfare funder, and several major supporters have committed to matching all gifts and pledges made through the set October 31, 2018 deadline, dollar for dollar, up to $250,000 to complete the campaign.

Board and shelter leadership have been working with nationally- and locally-recognized experts and architects since 2013 to design the facility that will help every pet have the chance for a loving home, and every pet parent have access to the resources and support they need to keep their pets in their homes — and out of the shelter — for life. The resulting new, ~22,000-square-foot facility will allow for improved operational efficiency for current programs and services, as well as the development and enhancement of new programs and services aimed at improving community animal welfare and keeping pets and people together. Construction is underway and the Lawrence Humane Society anticipates the new facility being fully operational by late-Spring 2019.

Public fundraising for the project began in April 2017. The Lawrence Humane Society has raised ~$7 million of the $7.5 million project total, including a $2.5 million commitment from the City of Lawrence.

The generous investment in a Matching Gift Challenge from the Petco Foundation and local supporters investment and Match Challenge will help to complete fundraising for the project, ultimately helping the Lawrence Humane Society build a new home to ensure that the organization will be able to meet the needs of local pets and the people who love them — now and in the future.

“We are so grateful for our community’s amazing support of this project, including the dedication of the Petco Foundation and several incredible friends of our organization who are committed to helping us reach our fundraising goal,” said Kate Meghji, executive director for the Lawrence Humane Society. “Every gift, regardless of size, makes a tremendous difference as we reach the finish line. We need the support of every pet parent and animal lover in our community to help us reach our goal by the October 31 deadline.”

All one-time gifts made by October 31 will be matched, dollar for dollar. Additionally, all new pledges (made over a period of up to five years) will be matched in their entirety by the Petco Foundation and the Lawrence Humane Society’s Matching Challenge donors.
