Like many shelters across the country, the Lawrence Humane Society utilizes variable adoption pricing. The higher adoption fees for more desirable or easier-to-adopt animals leave a financial legacy for the animals in our care who need extra time, TLC, or medical care before they can be made available for adoption.

  • Fees Vary:  Fees are listed on the Available Adoptions page on our website. If you have further questions on the fee of a specific pet, you can call us or stop by in person to speak with an adoption specialist.
What You’ll Receive

As an adopter, you are guaranteed to receive a lifetime of love from their new pet. In addition, as part of your adoption fee, your pet will receive:

  • A spay or neuter surgery (all pets are spayed or neutered prior to being made available for adoption)
  • Age-appropriate vaccines
  • Registered microchip
  • Starter bag of Hill’s Science Diet pet food (dogs and cats)
  • Free vet visit to a participating local veterinary hospital within 14 days of adoption
  • Companion Protect pet health insurance precertification and enrollment opportunities

Adoption Holds

The Lawrence Humane Society understands that sometimes, you need a little extra time to make a decision.

If you’ve already met one of our amazing pets and would like to bring additional family members to meet your potential pet, introduce your resident dog to the dog you’re interested in, or just need time to get your home ready for your new arrival, placing an adoption hold on your potential new pet will guarantee that he or she will not be adopted during your hold period.

Animals 6 months and older
  • $20 Hold Fee
  • Good through 6pm the day after the hold is placed
Animals under 6 months
  • $20 Hold Fee
  • Good through 6pm the day the hold is placed

Hold fees are non-refundable and do not apply to the adoption fee. Adoption holds can only be placed on animals after you have met the animal.
