Meet Our Staff
The Lawrence Humane Society has a professional, dedicated staff of animal care specialists and adoption coordinators to care for the animals, investigate cruelty cases and help families find just the right furry or feathered friend.
Kate Meghji joined the Lawrence Humane Society as executive director in August 2014. Kate served as director of Sinai Temple in Champaign, Illinois for five years, and prior to that was the manager of the Champaign County Humane Society. She is a member of the Society of Animal Welfare Administrators, holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from Evergreen State College and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Illinois. Kate has a long history of volunteerism, and has served on several non-profit boards, been a committee volunteer, and has also completed the United Way certification as an Emerging Community Leader. Under her leadership, the Lawrence Humane Society has plans to increase its impact in the community to increase the shelter’s live release rate by growing our foster and medical programs, increasing the services offered to the community, and by developing new programs and initiatives to help keep pets in homes. Kate and her husband, daughter, and dog are thrilled to be here in Lawrence.
Jennifer Stone, DVM
Jennifer Stone received her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois in Champaign/ Urbana, Ill. After graduation she went on to become a shelter veterinarian for the Champaign County Humane Society where she worked for six years. During her time at CCHS, she taught the fourth year veterinary student shelter medicine rotation for the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, helping fourth-year veterinary students hone their skills in surgery, and best practices in shelter medicine. She also taught the shelter medicine lecture course for the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. In 2010, Dr. Stone moved to Las Vegas, Nevada to become the Medical Director for The Animal Foundation, which is the largest single location shelter in the United States with an intake of 53,000 animals per year. Her time there resulted in a well-run medical program and a healthy population. In 2012, Dr. Stone and her family relocated to Lawrence, Kansas when she became the staff veterinarian at the Lawrence Humane Society. She and her family wanted to be closer to family and back in the Midwest. They have been very happy with the change and Dr. Stone is excited about the Lawrence Humane Society and all of the great changes taking place here! In her spare time, Dr. Stone is a mom, an artist and loves to garden. She has a husband, a 5-year-old daughter, and an assorted number of wonderful pets, all of which are shelter babies!
Jaron Asher, Director of Operations
Jaron Asher joined Lawrence Humane Society in September 2014. Prior to the Lawrence Humane Society, Jaron was the Operations Manager at Prairie Paws shelter in Ottawa, KS and also the Director of Kansas City Animal Control. Jaron holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Arkansas State University.
