FOSTER
Open your heart and home...
become a foster!
Sometimes, the greatest gift you can give to a shelter pet is time, love, and a temporary place to call home.
If you’re looking for a rewarding way to make a difference in the lives of pets in need — and you have a little extra room in your home and love in your heart — consider becoming a foster parent!
Lawrence Humane foster parents provide temporary care to animals that need a little rest and relaxation from the shelter, are not yet ready for adoption because they are recovering from injury or illness, or are too young to be adopted.

WHAT TO EXPECT:
Lawrence Humane foster parents provide care to pets for a variety of reasons! When completing your foster application, you’ll choose the kinds of animals you’re interested in and are comfortable caring for in your home. Animals are put into foster homes for a variety of reasons, including:
- When a pet has been with us for awhile or is showing signs of stress in the shelter: it is so lovely to get them on a couch and allow them to enjoy some respite from the shelter environment!
- TLC: pets that have suffered from an injury or illness benefit from a quiet, peaceful home in which they can rest and recuperate.
- Puppies and kittens: pets that are not old enough to be adopted are placed in foster homes while they grow big and strong
We provide you with all of the supplies and resources you need to care for your foster pet(s), including food, litter, medication, toys and enrichment items, medical care, and advice/tips.
Depending on your foster pet’s needs, foster periods can last anywhere from a few days to several months.
