Mabel's Major Move!

It isn’t always immediate for animals to come out of their shell after being adopted. Coming home with a new family can be scary, and just like humans, animals too can have a hard time with change. For Mabel, a Great Dane mix, it took her quite some time to adjust to her new home and family when she went home with the Carters. Despite her shyness, her new family was patient and loving with Mabel allowing her to take her time and acclimate to her new environment and family. Adopted in 2023, Mabel took about six months to fully decompress and venture out from her environment in the spare room of the Carter home.
The Carters were just in luck. Through their patience, kindness, and understanding for Mabel, she has fully blossomed into the amazing and loving dog she always had the potential to be. Two years later, Mabel has made quite the adjustment from her previous demeanor.
“She loves meeting people and sharing her big heart,” said Melissa Carter. Mabel has come as far as to now working for the Loving Paws Animal Therapy Program in Douglas County and meeting plenty of new faces and places on the regular.
She is a fan favorite at the University of Kansas and the Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Along with these spots, she also makes some appearances at the local Lawrence libraries and nursing homes. Although still having her sparing fearful moments, the community and the Carter family has stood by her side in support throughout it all. Melissa Carter explains that the community engagement has given Mabel a chance to persevere and face those fears with love and care.
“The community is as much her therapy blanket as she is to others,” said Carter.
