In the first week of June, we launched our Mass Street Mutts program and invited members of the public to come take a dog out for the day. We were thrilled that so many participants were willing to take shelter dogs out for adventures!
Lilo stayed with us for several months at Lawrence Humane with little to no interest. With all the folks signed up to participate in Mass Street Mutts, we decided to send her out into the world for her very first adventure! Prior to having these outings, it was hard to know how a shelter dog behaved in the real world versus the shelter setting. Dogs can behave entirely differently once they’re outside shelter walls so we were excited to learn more about how she behaved out in the real world!
As part of their doggy day out, the Mass Street Mutt participant decided they would take Lilo to the Lawrence PRIDE block party happening that particular day! Lilo met lots of amazing people that day but one little girl and her mom were particularly smitten with this sweet 7-year-old pittie.
Lilo instantly charmed the mom and daughter with her big smile and gentle demeanor. It didn’t take much convincing from the young girl that this dog needed to go home with them. After meeting Lilo, they decided to head right back to the shelter and sign the adoption papers!! It was already exciting enough to see many of our pups enjoying a day out of their kennel in the first week of launching this incredible program, but the fact that someone was adopting a dog after meeting them on their adventure had us all crying happy tears!
We get photo updates from Lilo and her loving family often, where we know she is loved beyond measure. The dynamic duo can often be found exploring the outdoors, snuggling up on the couch, and enjoying each other’s company.
Shortly after adopting Lilo, the family unexpectedly took in a puppy from a family friend. And somehow Lilo’s life improved even more having a puppy around! The mom reports how much Lilo loves having not one but TWO best friends (one human, one canine!).
We love knowing Lilo is living her best life and found the most perfect home to call her own – all thanks to Mass Street Mutts!
