Adoption Story: Gus

Adopting Gus!

It’s always best to try and find the positive when going through difficult situations. This was especially true for Rebecca Smith, who was grieving the loss of her dog M, which proved to be a rough time for her. After seeing a flyer posted by the humane society for an adoption event, Smith decided it was finally time for her to bring that positive energy back into her life. During this adoption event hosted by the Lawrence Humane Society, Smith ventured out to bring home her own Chiweenie puppy that she saw on a poster for the event.

After spending time grieving her dog who passed away, she felt it was time for her to finally bring in a new member of the family to help her get through the tough time and finally bring some joy into her life. “It was very emotional for me when the staff member brought out the puppy I chose”, said Smith, “It was love at first sight!”

Smith describes her new puppy as very tiny and very warm. At the time, his name was James Taylor, but after a few days of thought she decided to name him Gus. At the time he was adopted in April, Gus weighed only about three pounds, now he weighs almost 8 pounds, growing fairly quickly after just a couple months.

“He is a thriving bundle of joy,” said Smith, “and has become attached to my leg no matter where and when I move.”

Smith and Gus have become very attached over the last few months. When Gus isn’t playing out in the backyard, he enjoys jumping on the lawn furniture as well as the cushions in the living room. After a rough patch, Smith was able to find her silver-lining to help her get through the grief and is thankful for the experience and process of adoption which made it easier to do so.
