Because of our volunteers and foster parents, we are able to provide compassionate care to several thousand pets every year.

There are many ways you can help us protect and care for homeless, abandoned, and abused animals.

VOLUNTEER

Lawrence Humane Society volunteers give their hearts, their time, and their all to provide love and support to the homeless pets in our care. Our volunteers are integral to our mission, and are involved in all areas of the shelter. As a member of our volunteer family, you’ll help save and enrich pets’ lives, improve animal welfare in our community, make new friends (two- and four-legged), discover new skills, and enjoy plenty of wagging tails, purring hearts, and wet kisses along the way.

Open Your Heart and Home...
Become a Foster!

Sometimes, the greatest gift you can give to a homeless pet is time, love, and a temporary place to call home.

If you’re looking for a rewarding way to make a difference in the lives of pets in need — and you have a little extra room in your home and love in your heart — consider becoming a foster parent!

Lawrence Humane Society foster parents provide temporary care to animals that are not yet ready for adoption because they are recovering from injury or illness, or are too young to be adopted.

WHAT To ExPeCT:

Lawrence Humane Society foster parents provide life-saving and life-changing care to pets for a variety of reasons! When completing your foster application, you’ll choose the kinds of animals you’re interested in and are comfortable caring for in your home. Animals are recommended for our foster program for a variety of reasons, including:

  • TLC: pets that have suffered from an injury or illness benefit from a quiet, peaceful home in which to rest and recuperate
  • Underage Pets: pets that are not old enough to be adopted are placed in foster homes while they grow big and strong
  • Adoption Ambassadors: pets that are having difficulty adjusting to life in the shelter are placed in foster homes with our ambassador families
The Lawrence Humane Society provides all of the supplies you need to care for your foster pet(s), including food, litter, medication, toys and enrichment items, and medical care. Foster parents are responsible for regularly scheduled foster care appointments (frequency varies based on the reason the animal is in foster care). Additionally, our staff is available to answer any questions you have while fostering.
Depending on your foster pet’s needs, foster periods can last anywhere from two weeks to several months.

How it Works:

All participants MUST BE 18 years or older. Just pick your preferred participation date and time of pup pick up, fill out the application, and pay the participation fee using the platform below! You’ll then receive a link to view the online orientation and take a short quiz! Once your quiz answers have been reviewed, we’ll confirm your adventure!

Before you arrive on your selected date, shelter staff will work diligently to pair you with an amazing dog that matches your application answers. For example, if you indicated you’re comfortable spending time with a high-energy dog and plan to go hiking, we’ll pair you with a dog that has stamina!

On the day of your adventure, simply show up at the shelter during your designated time slot. Our staff will hook you up with a Pup Pack, which includes everything you need for your paw-some day! There is a $20 fee to participate.

HoST AN EvENT

You Can Save the Life of a Pet.
