Clear the Shelter Month: 2020

Every year around the end of summer, the Lawrence Humane Society participates in a nationwide event called “Clear the Shelter.” Hundreds of shelters across America host their largest adoption event all year long and hope to get all their animals adopted! Each shelter conducts the event a bit differently and this year was especially unique. Since March, our adoption process has operated virtually and our building has been closed to the public for browsing in order to keep our staff safe and healthy.

Despite these challenges, we continue to see incredible numbers of animals finding their forever homes each month. In August, we held a different adoption special every weekend. The first weekend was 1/2 off adoption fees, the second weekend featured our feline friends with an adoption price of $60 and BOGO kittens! The third weekend, we offered adoption fees of $75 for adult dogs and $125 for puppies. We saved the best for last with $20 adoption fees for ALL animals on August 29th.

Although we had animals in the shelter at the end of the day on Saturday, we still found almost 70 homes for amazing and deserving animals in a SINGLE day. That’s incredible! With all our weekend specials in the month of August, 355 animals found their forever homes here in Douglas county and beyond. That is a LOT of changed lives!

To anyone in the community who adopted an animal, to all the staff and volunteers who helped run the event, to the foster families who cared for an animal so we had extra space for transfers from other shelters, to anyone who took the time to share a Facebook/Instagram post – they say it takes a village and that is certainly true! We are so grateful for all of you.
