2024 “Tales for Tales” Reading Challenge

We had a delightful time reading books and raising money for Douglas County’s one and only animal shelter in the month of November! Participants joined for free and set goals for how many books they wanted to read (or listen to). They asked friends, family, and co-workers to “pledge” an amount for every book read. Together, we raised $3,310 and read 343 books – woohoo!

To celebrate reading together and raising money for animals at Lawrence Humane, our awesome friend, Deja Brooks, hosted a Reading Rainbow at the shelter – complete with our festive Pet Photos with Santa backdrop, cute kitties, and Winnie the Mastiff! It was a pleasure to have so many sweet families join us on a beautiful Sunday morning.

Congratulations to Kylie Kay Jackson for raising the most money! Not only did she read 17 books but she also raised $614 – WOW! Thank you, Kylie, for all your support and participation in our events!

The winner of the Most Books Read goes to Amanda Beil, who read a whopping 54 books. Amanda adopted a dog named Artemis earlier this year and during the month of November, she strived to read more poetry, brush up on Braille, continue the Chronicles of Narnia series, and read at least 30 books. We’re so thankful Amanda chose to reach her November reading goals while also supporting Lawrence Humane!

And lastly, our Kids category of most books read goes to Kasey Fewins St. Johns Kindergarten class who read 100 books together! This is the second year Kasey and her class have participated in this challenge.

Other notable contributions include the fabulous staff at Raven Bookstore and the Toy Store for forming teams and participating. We have the best time being in community with all you animal-loving bookworms!

In the spirit of cozy season, we thought we’d list a bunch of books read by participants. You can either borrow from our wonderful local library -OR- let the amazing booksellers at the Raven Bookstore make all your literary dreams come true!
